What kind of laser do we use?

Two different kinds of lasers are in use in the health care industry today: surgical lasers and therapeutic lasers. They are polar opposites. Surgical lasers cut tissue; therapeutic lasers heal tissue. Our Class IV Companion Therapy Laser(R) is a therapeutic laser. Use of therapeutic lasers is relatively new to veterinary medicine, with wider acceptance of its benefits developing over recent years. A major hurdle was cleared in February 2007, when the Food and Drug Administration gave its stamp of approval. Class IV lasers are about 50 times stronger than Class III predecessors, which had previously achieved mixed results, says Brian Pryor, Ph.D., president of LiteCure, which makes the Companion Therapy Laser. The Class IV therapeutic laser allows for better tissue penetration in a shorter amount of time, Pryor says.

How does the Companion Therapy Laser(R) work?

The deep-penetrating light produced by the laser causes the respiratory and metabolic rates of unhealthy cells to increase, thus re-energizing them to play an optimal role in helping the body heal itself. The laser affects only the unhealthy cells that need this process.

The deep-penetrating light triggers responses in cells that result in the release of endorphins, which are substances produced in the brain that act on cells in the same way that morphine does (i.e., eliminates all sensation of pain).

The deep-penetrating light also helps shorten the inflammatory cycle of the healing process for injuries. With the reduction of inflammation comes a reduction in pain as the body’s natural ability to repair and heal itself is stimulated.
