Senior Wellness Care

Wellness is all about prevention, early detection, and education!

At Mariposa, preventive and wellness care for all lifestages of pets is the cornerstone of our philosophy and approach to veterinary care. From newborns kittens to geriatric, white-faced dogs, we love them all and want to support your bond with your beloved family member.

When your pet has been with you for many years, they not only become irreplaceable members of the family, they also require a little extra care. As with humans, they often develop conditions that are slow in the beginning yet over time can rob them of the active, energetic lives that they have enjoyed with you.

As your pet ages we recommend that your pet’s visits become more frequent and that we see your pet every 6 months for senior care and blood work. This blood work may include urinalysis, kidney and liver functions, complete blood cell counts, and thyroid testing. It is important to have this blood work performed as it can uncover diseases that a physical examination may not detect. Animals are great at hiding illness and often by the time they are showing any signs of sickness it can be too late to treat them. Finding disease early gives us a better chance to heal your pet.

Physical Exam

As pets age much more rapidly than humans, we feel 6-month wellness visits are the most advantageous frequency of examination for early detection of illness. This would be comparable to a human visiting their doctor every 2-3 years.

Vaccines and Tests

Our doctors will work with you to help determine which vaccines and tests are most beneficial for your pet based on age and lifestyle. When appropriate, we use an extended length vaccine protocol to reduce the frequency of administration. This includes the use of vaccine titer tests when appropriate. Annual parasite screenings are recommended for all dogs and cats.

Parasite Prevention

Year-round parasite preventions (flea, heartworm, and intestinal) are recommended by our doctors for both indoor and outdoor patients. We can help you determine which product(s) are best for your pet based on lifestyle. For your convenience we dispense the products our doctors recommend most at our hospital.

Microchipping

The AVID Microchip is a way to permanently identify your pet. We implant a microchip the size of a grain of rice underneath the skin of your pet. If your pet is lost and is brought to the shelter or veterinary clinic, your pet can be scanned for a microchip and if found, your pet can then be traced back to you! This means you can be reunited with your beloved pet sooner! If your pet was ever stolen, you would have a means of positively identifying your pet since collars and tags can fall off or be removed. The procedure is inexpensive and could save your pet’s life!

Nutrition

It has been our experience that certain physical problems with our pets stem from the types of food they eat. Unlike most veterinarians, we don’t use or sell Hill’s Science Diet or Prescription Diet products. We offer nutritional consultations and diet recommendations that can help with the following:

  • Obesity Management
  • Diabetic Management
  • Sensitive Stomach Management
  • Allergy Management
  • Arthritis Management
  • Liver, Kidney, and Heart Disease Management
  • Urinary Tract Management
